Ball State University Police arrested two students Wednesday afternoon, according to an email sent to students at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the email, “On Monday, a student resident inside Baker Hall in the Noyer Complex accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in a non-life-threatening, self-inflicted wound.”

The student was transported to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital for treatment on Tuesday.

Both students have been arrested and charged in relation to negligent discharge, as well as immediately placed on interim suspension pending a full student conduct review process according to the email sent.

This is the second gun to be discharged on campus this semester, and the second time students and parents were not notified of the gun discharge through the campus alert system when the incident occurred.

President Geoffrey S. Mearns placed Ro-Anne Royer Engle, vice president for student affairs, in charge of establish an action group of individuals from various units on campus to address campus safety, according to the email.
