U.S. Representative Larry Bucshon says he will retire at the end of this year.
In a statement, the conservative Republican cited scripture in his decision to step down at the end of the 118th Congress.
Bucshon said “for everything there is a season” and it became clear to him over the holidays that the time has come to bring his season in public service to an end.
The Newburgh surgeon is serving his 7th term in the U.S. House, representing Indiana’s 8th District, which includes southwest and western Indiana.
As the son of an underground coal miner and a nurse who grew up in rural America, Bucshon says it’s been “the privilege of a lifetime” and he thanked his constituents for placing their trust in him.
With Bucshon out of the race, candidates have about a month to file for Indiana’s May primary election. The filing deadline for is February 9.
More districts without incumbents
Two other districts so far won’t have an incumbent for the 2024 election … maybe.
Republican Jim Banks in the 3rd Congressional District is seeking the state’s open Senate seat currently held by US Senator Mike Braun, who is running for governor.
In the Fifth District, Republican Victoria Spartz announced her intention not to run again in February of last year. But in December, she told the IndyStar she may have to reconsider her decision.
