UPDATE: This story was updated January 24 with information from the Indiana State Police.

A Muncie police chase turned deadly on Tuesday afternoon, before Muncie police could arrest the person officers were pursuing.

According to the Muncie Police Department, police were trying to arrest Olivia Larue on two active warrants for dealing drugs, drug possession, and “identity deception.”  One warrant is from Delaware County and the other is from Madison County.  Just after noon, Larue drove away from a traffic stop at Memorial Drive and Gharkey Street on the city’s south side.

In a statement, police say they learned Larue was “armed with a rifle” and threatened violence against officers.

The police chase took them into downtown Muncie, where Larue’s vehicle hit and flipped a car on Main and Mulberry Streets.  One of the two people in that car has died, identified as Javonta Jones of Muncie.

Larue pulled into a local parking lot and was surrounded by police.  Live video from a bystander showed armed officers calling to her with bullhorns.  After she left the car and was taken into custody, police continued to search for a passenger they thought was still in the car.  This included setting off two gas canisters into the car.  Police are still searching for that passenger.

Indiana State Police say Larue was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and then returned to the custody of the Muncie Police Department on those active warrants.

Muncie Police deputy chief Melissa Criswell says since MPD officers were involved in the chain of events, the Indiana State Police will investigate the fatal crash.  The Indiana State Police have confirmed, saying the investigation is still active and continuing.
