Longtime Delaware County Commissioner James King was defeated in Tuesday’s primary race by a challenger in his first race. IPR’s Thomas Ouellette reports.

This primary race was Brand’s first campaign for an elected position. He says he’s served on more than 20 boards throughout his career, and currently leads the Muncie Sanitary District board.

While Brand hasn’t clocked in any time in government he does have over 35 years of experience in finance and logistics.

Brand attributed his win over Commissioner King to his time in local business.

“We pulled some traditional tactics and techniques but we also pulled some unconventional things, ideas I had from my business experience and they seem to have worked,” he said.

“We did make some mistakes along the way but I am a reflective learner.”

Brand garnered more than 63 percent of Tuesday night’s votes.

In November, he will face Democrat Ashley Wright, who ran unopposed in the primary.
