A car crash at one of Muncie’s busiest intersections during the morning commute snarled traffic for much of the day Thursday.  The Muncie Police Department says it’s a result of a police chase that began in Henry County.

In a press release, Muncie police say they were notified just after 6:00 AM that Henry County police were chasing a vehicle that then drove into Muncie.  In a statement Thursday afternoon, the Indiana State Police say the driver was 28-year-old Zacery Antrim of Van Buren, and he fled from police after being stopped on suspicion that he was impaired.

State police say Antrim ran a red light at McGalliard Road and Tillotson Avenue and crashed into a vehicle driven by Shanta Schmeising of Muncie.  Both drivers were sent by ambulance to the hospital.

A passenger in Antrim’s vehicle, 25-year-old Nicholas Wollum of Muncie, died at the scene.

Muncie police say its traffic reconstruction team and the state police responded, which closed lanes and caused a large back-up as many people were trying to get to work.  The Muncie Police Department has said it had no control over the situation, as Henry County police continued the chase into Muncie.

The Indiana State Police are continuing the investigation.

In January, another chase through Muncie – this time from the Muncie Police Department – flipped a non-involved vehicle, killing a 30-year-old Muncie man.
